Trump to Reconsider Peace-Talks with Taliban

President Donald J. Trump states that he has reconsidered peace negotiations with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

On November 28th, President Trump paid an announced visit to American troops in Afghanistan for Thanksgiving and he stated that he had reopened peace-talks with the Taliban.

During his meeting with the President of Afghanistan Dr. Ashraf Ghani, President Trump stated, “The Taliban wants to make a deal, and we are meeting with them.” While emphasizing on the reduction of American military to 8,600 troops from roughly around 13,000, he further maintained, “We are going to stay until such time as we have a deal, or we have total victory, and they want to make a deal very badly.”

According to New York Times, this visit comes at a critical moment in United States’ long, drawn-out military venture in Afghanistan, a time when the country is mired in turmoil over disputed election results and Americans at home are increasingly tired of an operation that began shortly after the September 11 attacks.

The details of any renewed negotiations remain unclear, and the White House officials have not given much details beyond President Trump’s sudden visit. However, Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary stated that the visit was not about the peace process, but it was truly about Thanksgiving and supporting the troops.”

The Taliban have made no official comment about President Trump’s visit and statements so far.
